Stephen Scott-Fawcett reviews LICENSED TO DRILL!
I have no idea what Ian Fleming would make of this book but I, for one, loved it. This is, as the author states, possibly the last book in his trilogy of dental reminiscences.
Perhaps, given Mr Lawrence’s ‘Born Again’ lifestyle, it should be titled, ‘In the name of the Father, the Son and the (Tooth) Hole-he-goes’ – (the Holey Trinity no less)? But I digress. 007 would be proud of this latest collection – always funny, always pertinent, always human and always painfully contrived within a Bondesque theme!
The idea that this dentist, once newly-qualified, was ‘like a monkey with a pistol’ appeals to my morbid sense of humour.
The best bits, however, are not so much the funny anecdotes but the serious ones – for example, the enlightening story of the elderly patient who had one tooth removed (not by the author, incidentally) … and then glued back (eventually super-bonded by nature’s own healing hand).
Go buy this book and discover that dentists are human and mean you no harm, well – that’s what I’ve been told to say.
